Your car goes in for service, if you are lucky your 120 000 Major Service still falls under motor plan.

At The Vagspeccentre Group we urge our VW and Audi Customers to do a cambelt kit and waterpump between 90 000km and 120 000km.

In some cases the customer asks why do I need to replace both.

Well today I will explain to you in depth why this is so utterly important and why we recommend changing them together.

The funny if not ironic thing is that in most cases it is not the waterpump that is so expensive bit the cambelt.

When doing a cambelt kit the following will be on your quote

Cambelt kit

Waterpump

Coolant

Labour

In this specific order I will explain the function of each and every one of the components and why they are important.

Lets start of with the Cambelt Kit

The Cambelt Kit Comes standard with the following: Cam belt, Cam belt Tentioner, Cam belt Idler pulley and bolts.

Why is the cambelt so cambelt so important?

The cambelt is a rubber belt that controls the timing of your vehicle’s internal combustion engines. It performs a vital function by ensuring that the crankshaft and the camshaft rotate in synchronisation.

What will happen if the cambelt is worm?

worn out timing belt might also impact the engine’s fire rate. … However, sometimes the belt will slip on the camshaft drive and cause one cylinder to open or close earlier than it should. This might cause a misfire situation and if not replaced soon, may result in catastrophic engine damage.

Now your next question is what is a misfire?

misfire is what happens when any one of those three components; the fuel, the oxygen, or the spark are not working in the right order or time. The cylinders in your engine are supposed to fire in a precise order and when that goes wrong, it can have a great impact on the overall performance of the car.

What happens when the cambelt snaps?

If the timing belt snapsthey run into each othercausing bent valves (most common), cylinder head or camshaft damage, and possibly piston and cylinder wall damageWhile it is possible that no damage could occur from a snapped belt on an interference engine, such a case is unlikely.

Will this be costly?

Absolutely YES!!!

How is the waterpump impacted by the cambelt ?

In most cases, the timing belt drives the water pump, so it is the right time to replace the water pump. It is also recommended by the manufacturer. WORD TO THE WISE.

What happens to the cambelt if the waterpump seizes?

Water Pump Seizure Timing belts run through the water pump, which means it’s at risk should something go wrong with the water pump. When the water pump seizes, the gears stop turning with a strong force that will almost always break the timing belt

Why is coolant important to do when doing the waterpump.

Apart from the fact that the water will automatically drain when you take out the waterpump.

Coolant (or Antifreeze and Summer Coolant) protects your engine from freezing and/or over-heating while defending components against corrosion. It also plays a critical role in sustaining overall engine heat balance by removing heat.

As you heard now it is absolutely and utterly necessary to replace both the cambelt kit and waterpump together along with coolant. Depending on the car this can be a timely job and labour you can expect to be a lot.

Do not try to save a few rands by only doing your cambelt and end up with engine damage as a result.

Trust the Specialist when we tell you, rather do it right and have peace of mind.
